i haven’t seen anyone talking about this? i was rewatching s1 and immediately lost it at this dialogue in ep3, i had to connect it to the recent “i forgive you”.
aziraphale has always so desperately wanted to forgive crowley.
he wants to forgive crowley for being a demon. but crowley is just himself, on THEIR side, and doesn’t need nor want forgiveness.
he needs acceptance. he wants aziraphale to accept that they can love each other without conditions or sides.
also, i feel like aziraphale needs to realize that if it werent for crowley’s whipped ass keeping his secrets, he’d also be exiled like gabriel in s2… or worse.
he gave his sword away and it ended up being War’s weapon of choice (and you obviously cant have a war without War). he lied, and lied, and lied to heaven HQs. he feels like he can bestow forgiveness upon crowley in virtue of being an angel, but he doesn’t realize he’s really not that holy in the first place, despite the title.
and i love that for him. he’ll have to learn how to cope without crowley for once, after relying on him for six THOUSAND years. i cannot wait.
